5 Signs Your Windows Were Improperly Installed

The workmanship of your window’s installation affects its condition and performance. A properly installed window works more effectively and lasts longer compared to a badly installed window. You have to be mindful of your window’s installation. Here are five signs your windows were not installed correctly.

Signs Your Windows Were Improperly Installed

1. They’re Difficult to Open or Close

An effective window should not be hard to operate. You should be opening and closing your windows without a problem. If not properly installed, your windows would be difficult to open or close. This is bad news as windows should be tightly sealed when closed for insulation and safety. They should also be easily opened for ventilation and emergencies.

2. Gaps Between the Sill and Frame

A properly installed window would be correctly measured. If so, there should not be a gap between the sill and the frame. If this happens, contact your window contractor immediately.

3. Drafts or Water Damage

Properly installed replacement windows should be free of any premature damage. Check for signs of draft and water damage. If there is a sudden increase in your energy bill, your windows may not be insulated properly. For water damage, check for water pooling, mold and a foul smell.

4. Faulty Caulking

Your window’s caulk around its unit should be smooth and even. If there are holes or gaps in your caulk, that’s a bad sign. Your window’s caulking is a line of defense against harmful elements so it should be done carefully. Your window installer should correct the caulking immediately to avoid further damage.

5. Fog Between Window Panes

If there is a visible window condensation immediately after installation, you need to get your contractor back out ASAP. Your window installer may have compromised your window’s seal. It’s best to call the company back immediately, or call your window manufacturer to check its policies due to the installer’s error.
