A Guide to Choosing the Right Window Size

When looking for new windows, it’s important to find ones that are the right size. After all, a window replacement project should make your house look better from the outside, not worse. Renewal by Andersen of Long Island shares some tips on how to choose the right window size for your home.

Right Window Size

Windowsill Height

According to the International Residential Code (IRC), operable windowsills must be at least 24 inches off the ground. Sitting in a chair or on the bed should ideally allow you to see out. Your options will be limited to nonoperable windows like picture windows or floor-to-ceiling windows if the design demands for a significantly lower sill.

Window Head Height

There are no laws controlling how tall windows should be, and it’s often a subjective architectural choice. Too much space between the window head and the ceiling would reduce natural light – not an ideal choice when shopping for energy-efficient windows, unless you want to install clerestory windows to complement them.

Width-to-Height Proportion

Another subjective design decision involves determining the window’s width in relation to its height. Usually, the architectural style is a deciding factor. Continuous windows, for instance, are typical of modern design but would not fit well with classical buildings. On classic windows, grilles can also play a role. Generally speaking, taller grilles are preferable, especially on wide windows.

Other Things to Keep in Mind

Here are a few more tips that you should remember when planning your window installation:

  • The windowsills should be low enough so that even when you’re sitting down, you can still see outside.
  • When you have high ceilings in a room, the windows should be tall enough to match.
  • When installing glass close to the floor, use safety or tempered glass.
  • Make sure there is enough room above your windows for curtain rods or any other window treatments you may need.
  • Your window should be the right size in relation to the rest of your home’s interior and exterior. It can be hard to think about how your windows affect the outside and inside of your home, so make sure to work closely with an expert.
