French Patio Doors

A Quick History of French Doors

French doors became popular in 17th-century France as full-height windows that lead to balconies. The original designs bear a heavy influence from ancient Roman architecture and Renaissance designs, particularly in the symmetry and proportion still used today.

Early French door frames already had the familiar dual-door design with a middle locking mechanism but were made of plain, solid wood. Glazing was added to the design much later, providing an early solution for daylighting. Whereas today’s replacement windows and patio doors have dual glass panes with grilles installed on or in the glass, French doors at the time had individually cut glass panes installed on wood frames. This glass-and-grille design then became the basis for today’s French doors.

Today’s French doors are used as entry and patio doors instead of balcony doors, but the design adheres to tradition even with modern manufacturing techniques and materials. Wood finish is preferable, which is why our Frenchwood® door frames are our only patio door line that has three stainable interior wood finishes to choose from: pine, oak, and maple. The frame interior features superior insulation, for enhanced energy efficiency.

Our High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass options feature low-emissivity coatings that reflect harmful UV and infrared rays while letting through natural light, like clear glass. You can let in as much daylight as you want without worrying about faded fabrics or introducing unwanted solar heat into your home. Our metallic hardware options complete the Old World look.
