Choosing the Best Window Types for Your Cincinnati Home

New windows can transform the look of your Cincinnati home and also make your day-to-day life more comfortable. However, there are many different window styles to choose from. Are double-hung windows the best choice, or should you go with casements? Is an awning window a good fit for your kitchen? Keep reading for some guidance when it comes to choosing the best type of window for your home.

How would you prefer to open your windows?

For most Cincinnati home owners, double-hung windows are pretty easy to open and close. You simply slide the top window down, or push the bottom window up. Sliding the windows does require a little arm strength and stability, however, so if you have limited mobility or a lack of upper body strength, you may instead want to install casement windows. Casement windows open with a little crank at the base of the window. You do not have to push or pull on anything — just use one hand to turn a crank. This, for example, makes casements easier for homeowners in wheelchairs to open. They also work well behind counters. Because who wants to lean over a counter to push a double hung window open?

What are your ventilation needs?

If you use window air conditioners, then make sure you install double-hung windows in any window openings where you plan to place the air conditioners. Most units are not compatible with casement windows or sliding windows.

If there are windows that you plan to open wide to allow plenty of air inside, but where you don’t plan to place an air conditioner, then casement windows are a good choice for those spaces. When a casement window is open, the window panel catches cross-breezes and funnels them into your home. In smaller window spaces, like those in your kitchen or bath, awning windows work well. They crank open like a casement window, but the hinges are placed along the top, rather than the side, of the window opening.

Are your windows against a patio or porch?

If you have windows set against a patio or porch, you’ll want to avoid placing casement or awning windows in those openings. The windows, when open, will create an obstruction on the patio. You would not want someone to bang their head on an open window panel! Sliding windows work really well along patios since you can hand things through them when open. Double-hung windows are also a good choice.

Do you want your windows to improve your view of the outdoors?

Do you have a gorgeous yard, a lovely view of rolling hills, or a quaint forest outside your home? Perhaps your small, double-hung windows don’t allow you to enjoy the fullness of the view. Replacing your small windows with either a picture window or a large bow window may be a good choice. A picture window does not open, but it allows an unobstructed viewBay and bow windows are comprised of several double-hung or casement windows, so they do open for ventilation. However, they are more time-consuming to install than a picture window.
