Common Door Problems You’ll Face During Winter

Winter can often mean a bit of inconvenience for your home even if you have the best materials installed. Your doors, in particular, can still experience problems despite being designed to withstand extreme weather elements. Replacement windows and doors specialist Renewal by Andersen® of Long Island shares some of the common issues your doors will face during winter:

Common Door Problems

Loose Screws

Screws may come loose from your door sometimes during winter. This is often caused by changes in humidity and temperature and causes several issues if left unaddressed. For instance, loose screws can cause your door to sag and not fit squarely within the frame. It can also cause the door to rub or stick against the frame.

To fix this, you can simply try to tighten the screws. But if they’re already stripped, you’ll have to drill new pilot holes for new screws. Make sure to replace the existing screws with ones that are slightly bigger in diameter.

You can also use a dowel; just glue it using dowel glue into the screw holes. Once completely dried, you can drill new pilot holes and install the new components. But if you find this a bit complicated to do on your own, you can always hire a trusted professional on doors and windows to fix this issue.

Door Bind Problems

When your door binds in the upper corner of the jamb, it’s the result of the door pulling down at an angle from the top corner. This is actually a very common issue for wood entry doors during winter; they expand and contract due to the changing weather and end up getting stuck. A binding door can also be caused by the weight pulling down on the opposite corner and the stripped screws giving out. If you’re already having this problem, we suggest consulting with a trusted contractor to make the necessary repairs.
