Dressing Your Windows Up for Autumn

While dressing up the inside of our homes, we can sometimes forget that the outside would look nice with a little autumn décor as well.  You don’t have to go overboard and purchase every inflatable, Halloween, lawn decoration you can find at the store though.  Instead, add touches of autumn around your windows to get an elegant look.

Autumn Garland

Many people use autumn garland to decorate the inside if their homes.  This garland usually has fall leaves attached in ivy form.  Autumn garland can also include pumpkins, acorns and gourds as well.

People wrap it around stair railings, drape it over door openings and weave it around objects sitting on shelves.  Autumn garland can also be used to decorate the tops of both the inside and outside of your windows.  If you are going to use autumn garland on the outside of your home, use the one with just the leaves.  You don’t want hanging pumpkins and gourds swinging against your windows during a fall storm.

Just like with Christmas garland; take the autumn garland and attach it elegantly on the frame of the window, just above the glass. If you plan on hanging garland for Christmas as well, you may want to secure the garland with picture nails.  The nails will keep the garland secure if an autumn storm comes up.  The nails also stay in better, so when you are ready to take the autumn garland down, you can put the Christmas garland right up.

After the holidays, remove the small nails and fill the holes in with wood filler.

Autumn Window Framing

With autumn window framing, you aren’t going to literally frame a window.  Your window is going to be surrounded with fall decorations, becoming the “framed in” center of the display.

To do this, you will need dried cornstalks, hay bales, and lots of pumpkins and gourds.  On the outside of your house, place the hay bales underneath the window.  How many hay bales you need will depend on how wide your window is.  A 5-6 foot window will need 3 hay bales; two on the bottom and one stacked on top.

On top of the hay bales, stack the pumpkins and gourds.  They should be on the ground, as well as on the hay bales.  Finally, on either side of the hay bales arrange a bundle of cornstalks.  This display looks especially nice if there are simple decorations on the interior of the window as well.  Don’t add too much else though, or it will lose its simple, autumn elegance.
