FAQs about Window Glazing

Glazing is one of the key things you should demystify when buying replacement windows for the first time. Glass is responsible for defining the quality of any window, especially when energy efficiency is the subject.

FAQs about Window Glazing

As one of the top window contractors in the Bay Area, Renewal by Andersen® of San Francisco answers these FAQs about glazing:

Why is Double Glazing the Standard?

Double glazing refers to windows consisting of two glass panes. The space between the glass sheets contains a gas, usually argon, used to resist heat transfer for excellent insulation. As opposed to single-pane units, the thermal performance of dual-pane products meets the strict energy efficiency criteria in most climate zones.

In North America, dual-pane windows are more of the standard than an option. They have no downside, except upgrading all of your single-pane units to see noticeable and consistent reductions in your energy bills.

What is Low-E Glass?

Shorthand for low-emissivity, every energy-efficient window has a Low-E coating. While you wouldn’t see them, you’d feel their benefit because they block unwelcome heat and protect against solar damage.

Instead of buying anything with Low-E glass, experienced window companies recommend products with spectrally selective Low-E coatings. Windows reinforced by these invisible, protective layers reflect the sun’s infrared and ultraviolet rays but allow visible light through for maximum daylighting and clear views.

Why Do Energy Ratings Matter?

Understanding the parts is good, but knowing how to read energy ratings set by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is better. The NFRC measures the performance of each window in critical areas: U-factor (insulation), Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (heat gain resistance), and Visible Transmittance (daylight admittance). For the first two factors, low numbers mean greater performance. For the third one, higher is better.

What Numbers Are Ideal?

Any window contractor would say that the ideal energy ratings depend on where you live. The fastest way to identify efficient ones is by looking at the ENERGY STAR seal on the window. Based on the label’s map, you’d know the product could perform optimally when your city is shaded.

Renewal by Andersen of San Francisco products are ENERGY STAR®-certified with excellent NFRC ratings. We have the perfect glass solution for your unique energy performance requirements.
