Geography & Home Improvement

What do you spend on home improvement? Turns out, the amount of money you spend and what you spend it on can depend on where you live.

Houzz, a home remodeling and design website, commissioned a survey showing home improvement spending trends throughout different regions of the U.S.

According to the survey, people in the Midwest put more money into swimming pools than people in other parts of the country. So why the Midwest? An owner of an Illinois-based swimming pool shared his opinion with the Wall Street Journal. He says there are fewer homes in the Midwest with pools, and less months in a year to use a pool. This means there are fewer pool companies and less competition.

If the Midwest wants to go swimming, people in the Northeast want a nice place to cook. The survey shows Northeasterners spend more money on kitchen remodeling. In fact, homeowners in the Northeast spent the most overall in terms of home remodeling project. The survey points to the facts that homes in the Northeast tend to be older and may lack updated or more current amenities.

Home construction projects tend to cost the most in the western U.S. It comes down to money. California has a higher cost of living. Therefore, the cost of labor tends to be more expensive in that part of the country.

The home improvement survey was conducted earlier this year. Users were asked how much they spent on home improvement projects.

As great as a swimming pool can be, we want to remind you how your home in Michigan can benefits from energy efficient doors and windows. This is especially true if you decide to replace older doors and windows in your home. It’s a lot less than installing a swimmer pool and a lot more practical for your home.
