Growing an Herbal Garden in Your Kitchen Window

Having an herbal garden in your kitchen adds a functional greenery that is beautiful to look at as well as practical to use.  Starting and maintaining an herbal garden is much easier than most people think; in fact, it can actually be easier than keeping most indoor plants and flowers alive.

It also is much more rewarding than just growing an indoor plant, as once the herbs mature you will have fresh herbs to enhance the flavor of your cooking.

Any container you can find will work well for an herbal garden.  Because herbs don’t have a large root system, you are free to use smaller pots than you would normally think to use.  The only requirement is that the container needs to have holes in the bottom, as herbs grow best in well-drained soil.

Choosing What to Plant in Your Herbal Garden

Don’t just grow an herbal garden to have one in your kitchen.  They are nice to look at, but growing herbs that you have no use for while you are purchasing other ones at the store for your cooking is a waste.  Instead plant the herbs that you use the most in your cooking.

If you are hesitant about growing herbs to use in your cooking because you don’t know how to get them from the point that they have grown in your herbal garden to the point that you are able to cook with them, then learn how.  Ask friends and family that cook with fresh herbs.  You can watch videos on the Internet that will teach you how to harvest and use the herbs; they will even teach you how to store the herbs that you don’t use.

Locations for Herbal Gardens

The kitchen window above the sink is the best place to grow herbs, as long as the window has at least 6 hours of sun.  If you don’t have a bay window there above the sink, you may want to think about having one put in if you are planning to plant a large herbal garden often.

Otherwise, you can purchase shelves to place your herbal garden on.  These shelves have legs that go on either side of the sink and the shelf sits above the faucet.  They are very sturdy and are easy to clean when the time comes.

Either way you go, the herbal garden needs to be raised enough so that it gets the sun coming in from the window.  You can actually have it in any room in the house, it just makes it more convenient to have a herbal garden in the kitchen because you are going to use it there and it reminds you to water it.
