How to Weatherproof Your Windows from Ice

As much as you may not want to think about it, ice is going to be forming on the outside of your Cincinnati windows soon. While ice on your home windows may not be as much of a pain as ice on your car windows, it can still cause problems.

Ice buildup can lead to a window leaking, it prevents you from being able to see outside, and if you have the misfortune of not having double-paned windows it leads to ice on the inside of your home.

Ice Prevention on the Outside of Cincinnati Windows

There are a number of things that you can do to prevent ice from forming on the outside of your windows. Here is the one that doesn’t require additional construction or heating elements.

Go to the automotive section of the store, and purchase a can of defrosting solution. This is the same solution that they use on cars to keep the ice off them. Follow the directions on the can and use on your home windows.

You can also make your own solution with 3 parts vinegar and one part water, and dispense the solution on your windows with a spray bottle. If you don’t like the smell of vinegar, use 70% isopropyl alcohol instead. However, with this solution you mix one part isopropyl alcohol with one part water.

As with any product, test on a small area of window first to see if it will work for your windows without causing any damage.

Ice Prevention on the Inside of Cincinnati Windows

If you have ice on the inside of your windows there are two things you need to do. First, switch to energy-efficient windows. These types of windows are designed to not have this problem. They keep the cold winter air on the outside where it belongs, and leaves the warm heated air on the inside of you home where you want it.

If you can’t switch to energy-efficient windows yet and you are having ice buildup on the inside of your windows, you need to adjust the humidity in your home. Too much humidity + freezing cold windows = ice buildup on the inside.
