Improving the View from Your Home

When you read the listings for the homes that are for sale, you may have noticed that the ones that are listed as having a great view are slightly more expensive than the others.  As home buyers we put a premium on being able to see unique or beautiful things directly from our homes.  These premium views can include bodies of water, mountains, valleys, and even gardens; basically, anything other than buildings and nature sites that man has destroyed.

If your home has access to a great natural view, you need to take advantage of it and enhance it anyway you can to increase both the financial value of your home and for your own enjoyment.  And even if your home doesn’t have a great view naturally, you can create one.

Remove any Obstructions to Improve the View

To enhance a view you already have from your home, first, you need to remove any obstructions between your home and the view.  This doesn’t mean buying out your neighbor’s house and knocking it down, but rather removing items you have control of.  For example, if you have a great view of a mountain range from your dining room window but there are tall shrubs planted right next to the window, remove the shrubs and plant something else there that will not grow as tall and block the view.

Create Your Own View

Not all of us are blessed with being able to see mountains, rivers, lakes, or far stretching valleys from our homes.  But this doesn’t mean we can’t create our own spectacular views.

First, create a wall between you and your neighbor or whatever else your home may be next to for the area outside the windows of the rooms you spend the most time in.  This can be done by installing a fence or planting a wall of tall shrubs.

Next, plan out the landscaping for the area between your windows and the wall.  If you aren’t creative, you can find many landscape architecture plans online to follow if you are looking for some good ideas.

Finally, follow the plan and install your own, personal view.  The basic idea of this whole plan is that since you don’t have a great view of nature from your home, you are instead blocking off your own little section of the world around your home and bringing nature to you.

Upgrade Your Windows to Improve the View

Any great view that you may have from your home can always be further enhanced with the perfect windows.  Windows that are old and block a great view is like trying to appreciate a beautiful piece of art with you sunglasses on; you just never get the full feel of what you are looking at.
