Let’s Talk about Cincinnati Window Glass

Cincinnati window glass may not seem like an exciting topic of conversation, but you might be surprised at how complex window glass is. Glass is no longer the simple, single layer that it started out as. Now window glass has special coatings, tints, and different layers to make it a better functioning part of your window as a whole.

And all of these different things affect how your window acts when it is on your home. So, when you are in the market for new windows, it may be boring, but it is important to talk about the details that go into Cincinnati window glass.

Special Window Coatings

There are three different types of window coatings that are used on windows.  All three of these coatings are added to block the sun’s rays in one way or another.

The first coating is a reflective coating that blocks the transmission of sunlight more than sun heat. This type of coating is usually used in hot climates to control solar heat gain, and is usually made from thin, metallic layers of material.

Next there are the spectrally selective coatings. These coatings filter out 40%-70% of the heat that normally gets through a window. They are called “spectrally selective” because they block the infrared rays from the sun that create the heat, while still allowing the light rays from the sun to get through.

Finally, low-e coatings (low-emissivity) reduce total energy loss through a window by 30%-50%, which decreases your utility bill all year long. You can find this type of coating with our windows, and it is used in conjunction with a special coating that makes our windows self-cleaning.

Window Tints

The tints that are found on a window are part of the glazing on the window. The tints change the color of the glass, and they also absorb a large part of the solar radiation that hits the glass. Tints do allow some heat to get through, and they work best in conjunction with one of the other coatings above.

Multiple Panes and Insulation

To increase the energy efficiency of a window, multiple planes of glass are designed into a window. Some of these windows have two panes of glass, with one on the inside of the house and one on the outside. There can even be three panes of glass, with the same set up as the two panes, but with an additional pane of glass in the middle. These multiple panes act as multiple barriers to prevent airflow.
