Letting the Right Light in Your Bathroom

A dark bathroom with no windows is nowhere near as comforting as one that does have them.  The light that comes in through the window is good for your physical health, your mental health, and it saves electricity as you don’t have to turn on the light during the day.

Being able to open a window in your bathroom has its own set of benefits as well, such as not having to use electricity to turn on the ventilation fan when you are taking a hot shower, and bringing fresh air in the room when the odor is less than desirable.  The best part of being able to open a window in the bathroom is that it allows moisture to escape the bathroom so that mold and mildew don’t grow.

Large vs. Small Bathroom Windows

Large windows are great to allow in a lot of fresh air and light, but they also can expose more than you really want shown.  Larger windows also need window treatments to not only prevent exposure, but also to look their best.  Smaller windows on the other hand can get away with not having a window treatment.

The most typical small bathroom window that is installed is the long, rectangle window.  These types of windows are installed near the ceiling, allowing the rising steam from a hot shower to escape through them.  In fact, even though these windows have a smaller opening than their larger counter part, they do better at letting steam out of the room because of where they are located.

Fixed Bathroom Windows

While one of the perks of having a window in the bathroom is being able to open it, sometimes it just isn’t practical.  Besides with having a ceiling vent in your bathroom to allow the steam from a hot shower escape, an open window is not a necessity.

A fixed window will allow you to still be able to enjoy all of the benefits of the sunlight coming in your bathroom, but with less cleaning hassle than you would have with a window that opens.

Energy-efficient Bathroom Windows

Don’t forget that the windows in your bathroom need to be energy-efficient just like the rest of the windows in your house.  With all of the linoleum, tile, and ceramic in that room it can get pretty cold in the winter.  Having windows that aren’t energy-efficient and let cold air into your bathroom can make the mornings rather unpleasant for you.
