Siding or Windows: Which One Should Be Replaced First?

Investing in both replacement windows and siding is considered ideal because it allows you to enhance the aesthetics of your home while bolstering its protection against the elements. But sometimes, budget constraints prevent you from tackling both home improvement projects at once. You might be wondering which one to replace first – your siding or windows.

Siding or Windows: Which One Should Be Replaced First?

Which One Should You Replace First?

Usually, contractors will suggest that you tackle both simultaneously. However, this does not mean that they’re replacing your windows while replacing your siding at the same time. This only means that they will do one step after the other. Their much preferred first step is replacing your windows first and here’s why.

Replacing your windows involves setting them in place and then finishing it off with capping the surrounding areas. This means that there will be some part of the walls or siding that may be damaged if you install the siding first. Additionally, windows can create up to 30% energy loss for your home, and this builds up over time. If you finish the window replacement first, then you’re conserving more energy.

After the windows are installed, your contractors may then proceed to installing your siding. This way, the capping around your old windows will no longer damage your newly installed siding. Additionally, a moisture barrier will be installed underneath your siding when installing replacement windows. Because of this, the contractors may have to remove the siding first, install the moisture barrier and then reinstall the siding if you proceed with siding replacement first.
