Time to Spring Clean Your Window Frames

Don't Forget Window Frames in Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning makes your house look beautiful and makes you feel good and ready for the good weather ahead! When you get busy with spring cleaning, it’s easy to overlook some of the lesser-noticed parts of the house, like the window frames.

Dust, mildew and other forms of grime can make your windows more difficult to operate, increase wear and tear on operable parts and simply look less attractive than they used to be It’s important to remember this part of your house when you’re getting your spring cleaning done. Here’s how to get your window frames cleaned.

Perform General Cleaning of Window Frames

To perform general cleaning, start with a damp microfiber cloth, wetted with dish soap mixed in warm water). Use the cloth to wipe down the window sill and then dry it with a dry microfiber cloth.

If you don’t have microfiber, use a soft rag. Terrycloth towels work as do old tee shirts and even paper towels, but keep in mind that some cloths can leave fibers on your window frames, creating a need for more dusting later on.

Clean Window Tracks

Window tracks can get filled with grime, dirt and dead bugs. Use a vacuum to clean out your window tracks. Next, dust the sill with baking soda combined with vinegar. Allow the combination to fizz and then let the solution sit on the tracks for 10 minutes before cleaning them up.

If there is still grime in the tracks of your window sill after doing this, use a dull butter knife or a skewer to push a microfiber cloth down into the tracks, and run the cloth back and forth to get rid of any remaining dirt.

Remove Mold from Window Frames

Mold can build up around windows that have leaks or a lot of condensation. Mold can also develop on your windows if they’re routinely left open during rain storms. The mold may be on the surface of the window frame, or it may go deep into the frame and wall, depending on the severity of the leak.

To remove surface mold, mix equal parts of water and vinegar together and combine in a spray bottle. Spray the moldy areas on the window frames, then use a scrub brush to scrub away the mold.

Use a soft-bristle scrub brush, or a microfiber cloth. If your windows are made of wood, try this cleaning solution on a test area before scrubbing down the surface of the window frame to ensure that the vinegar and water combination won’t do damage to the frame.

One more thing: mold should not regularly appear on your window frames. If it does, this could mean your windows need repair, or it could be a sign that condensation is a problem in your home.

Use a dehumidifier to control humidity. If your windows are left open and rain has caused the windows to become moldy, make it a habit to pay attention to your weather reports, and shut the windows when it’s needed.
