Window Maintenance: Spring Cleaning Tips

It’s that time of the year again! As you go through your spring cleaning routine, make sure you freshen up your windows on Long Island too. It’s important to keep your windows in tip-top shape for the next season. Check if they’ve incurred serious problems that might need professional repair or replacement. Well-maintained windows don’t just look beautiful; they also increase your home’s performance and value. As your local window experts, we at Renewal by Andersen® of Long Island would love to help you keep your windows in good condition.

Here are several tips for window cleaning:

•    Contrary to what most people believe, a sun-shiny day is not the best time to clean your windows. Instead choose a cloudy, but dry, day for cleaning your windows. Direct exposure to sunlight can dry the cleaning solution before you can even polish the glass properly.
•    Start by wiping loose dirt and grime from the glass component of your windows. Be sure to use a clean and soft cloth.
•    Make sure you clean both the inner and outer parts of your window. For better results, consider using a rubber-edged squeegee instead of cloth or paper towels for cleaning.
•    If you have tall windows at home, use a squeegee with a long handle for maximum reach. To avoid any mishaps, we do not recommend climbing up on a ladder.
•    When washing, be sure to start from the top to prevent dripping water. We also advise placing pieces of cloth at the base of the window to absorb any dripping water. This will also help protect your window frames.
•    We recommend washing your windows using horizontal strokes on one side and vertical strokes on the other. This method will help you see which side of your window has stains.
•    You can polish away tiny scratches and marks using toothpaste. To give your windows extra shine, polish them with crumpled newspaper or a clean cotton cloth.
•    Lastly, after washing, don’t forget to dry the windowsills with a well-washed cloth to help protect its frame and finish.
