You Don’t Need a Farmhouse to Have Farmhouse Windows

Farmhouse windows got their start in the Midwest when people were making the push west to settle the land beyond New England. They went hand in hand with the new Farmhouse style architecture that was being created at the time; which is where their name came from.

These types of windows are still popular today and can be found all over the country, well beyond their original Midwest roots.

What Are Farmhouse Windows?

Farmhouse windows are a simple design, just like the architecture of the homes that they were originally installed on.

These types of windows are tall and narrow creating the shape of a long rectangle. In most cases Farmhouse windows are double-hung windows, but can also come in a fixed window. The grille pattern for these windows matches the simplicity of the overall design with a grille vertically dividing the top pane of glass in half, and then doing the same with the bottom pane.

When a young child draws a picture of a house, these are the windows that they draw.

What Colors Are Farmhouse Windows Available In?

The design of Farmhouse style windows may be simple, but they do come in a huge selection of different color combinations that you can choose from. Exterior trim colors include:

  • Canvas
  • Sandtone
  • Forest Green
  • Cocoa Bean
  • White
  • Dove Grey
  • Terratone
  • Red Rock

The interior of our Farmhouse windows can be made of either pine or oak and can be stained in the colors of honey or mocha.

Can I Make These Simple Windows More Decorative?

If you change too much of the design of these windows and make them complicated, then you lose the spirit of simplicity that makes them a Farmhouse window. But, there are subtle things that you can do with them that can make them a little more uniquely yours.

A typical Farmhouse window has a 4.5” to 5.5” trim around it and a 1.75” sill nose. To make it a little more decorative, you can extend the sill nose, extend the head trim, or even add a cornice above the window. Again, these types of additions are simple and will keep the simplicity of the Farmhouse windows intact, but will also give you room to express yourself.
