Off-the-Shelf vs. Custom Windows: Which One Will You Get?

Window replacement involves a lot of research and decision-making. There are several window styles and materials available on the market, each with its own set of benefits to offer. For some homeowners, ordering standard-size windows off the shelf is the best option, while custom windows may fit the bill for others. But what’s the difference between the two?

Comparison of Off-the-Shelf & Custom Windows

Not sure which one you need? Here’s a brief look at the differences between standard and custom windows:

1. Size and shape
Windows are available in different sizes and shapes. In the case of off-the-shelf units, the opening was designed by the builder to fit standard window dimensions. The reverse is true for custom windows: the unit is produced by the window manufacturer to fit the dimensions of the opening. But regardless of what type of window you’re getting, precise measurements will need to be taken before the replacement units are ordered to ensure a perfect fit.

2. Style
Off-the-shelf units come in a wide variety of styles. Type of operation aside, there are a lot of options in terms of mullions, trims, colors and finishes. Similarly, custom windows can be made in a broad range of non-standard styles. In either case, the goal is to complement the architecture of your home. For example, double-hung windows with grilles work well with American Farmhouse and Georgian/Federal homes, while Atlanta casement windows are a great match for French Eclectic and Spanish Colonial designs.

3. Performance
Standard and custom windows offer comparable performance. Ultimately the only material differences between the two are their dimensions and mode of production (produced en masse vs. made to order). Both window types can be a good choice if you want to save on your electric bills.
