The Energy Star Label and What It Represents

The Energy Star label has been around long enough that almost everyone is familiar with seeing it.  You can find it on just about any products that are associated with energy usage.  This means the label is on everything from dishwashers and dryers to windows.

But do you really know what the label represents?

Earning the Energy Star Label Windows

For a product to earn an Energy Star label it has to be made by an Energy Star partner, and it has to be tested and certified by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC).  Once it has been rated by the NFRC, these ratings have to meet the energy efficiency guidelines from the Department of Energy (DOE).

Earning an Energy Star label is not something that is guaranteed forever either.  The companies that make the product have to continue to comply with changing requirements.  They can lose their Energy Star rating if they fail to meet new requirements.

What This Means for Consumers

When a consumer sees an Energy Star label on a product they know that they are purchasing a product that will save them money on their energy bill.   In the case of a window with the Energy Star label, they will keep your home at a more comfortable temperature while giving your heater or air conditioner a break from having to work so hard.

While the label itself does not make a product more expensive, it can indicate that it is.  This is because products that have earned the Energy Star label are usually products that are of a higher quality.

For example, a single-pane window that does a poor job of keeping the cold out during the winter or the heat out in the summer is naturally going to be less expensive than the double-paned energy-efficient window.  Even though the second window will be the one to have the Energy Star label, even without it this window would still be more expensive.
