Change Your Cincinnati Window Box to an Autumn Garden

With the air cooling down and the summer growing season over, it’s time to get new flowers in your window box to bring color back. Because we are going in to fall, autumn annuals are going to be your choice for refreshed color in your Cincinnati window box.

Cleaning Out the Window Box

Before you plant your new fall annuals, clean out all of the dead summer annuals and other garbage that has collected in your window box. Also add a little plant fertilizer to the soil to renew the nutrients that have been used up during the spring and summer growing season.

With the cleanup and the fertilizer,  you will have a clean window box with good soil to give you a solid start to your fall window box.

Flower Ideas for Your Window Box

If you aren’t sure what the best flowers are to decorate your autumn window box, here are some ideas:

  • Chrysanthemums
  • Gazanias
  • Small sunflowers (the ones that are more like bushes not the large single stalks)
  • Marigolds
  • Snapdragons
  • Salvias
  • Cosmos
  • Asters
  • Hollyhocks

You can even plant colorful vegetables in your window boxes that you can eat at the end of the season. Vegetables like chard and kale add great fall color, and they make fun additions to salads later on in the season. So you end up with a plant that serves two functions for you.

Other Fall Additions to Your Window Box

Later in the fall when your new annuals have had a little more time to get established and you can see where they have filled up your window box, add some other fall produce or decorations. Items like pumpkins, gourds, and any other natural fall decorations that would blend well with the annuals.

Using a garland of fake leaves around the base of the annuals and draped over the sides of the window box also add a nice splash of color.

By decorating your window box with fall annuals and other fall decorations, your home’s windows will look already to celebrate the season, as well as the two upcoming holidays without having to do any other decorating.
