Christmas Card Windows

One of the best parts of Christmas is getting Christmas cards in the mail.  Unfortunately, at the end of the season most of these Christmas greetings just get thrown away.  Why not keep some of the best ones you received this Christmas and create a decoration that you can hang up next year?

Single Christmas Card Panels

With the single Christmas card window, you are going to find a vintage window with multiple panes in it.  The more panes the better, but don’t go for a really big vintage window as it doesn’t look as good and it is cumbersome to store, as well as hang.

When you have started to take down your Christmas decorations, go through your Christmas cards and select your favorite cards from this year.  If you chose a window with 6 panes in it, then you are going to select 6 of your favorite cards.  If you have chosen a window with 8 panes in it, then you will choose 8 of your favorite cards.  In other words, match the number of cards you chose with the number of panels in the window you are using.

To place the cards in the window, you are going to punch two holes at the top of each card so that they are evenly spaced and do not take out too much of the picture.  Next, take a beautiful piece of shimmering holiday thread and push it through one hole from back to front and then the next hole from front to back.  Tie the thread behind the card in an easily releasable bow.

The part of the thread that is in the front of the card will be stapled to the part of the window frame that is directly above the card.  So you need to make sure that the thread is long enough to be attached to the Christmas card, the window frame and still allow the card to hang in the center of the pane.

The bow that you tied in the back of the card can be easily untied the next year so that you can add new Christmas cards.

Christmas Card Window Collage

The Christmas card window collage will not only allow you to save more of your Christmas cards; it is also the easier project out of the two.  First, select a vintage window like you did for the above project.

Take a sheet of contact paper and cut it so that it will fit just to a little over the inner edge of outside frame of the window.  Next, arrange your cards where you want them to go on the contact paper while the sticky part still covered.  You don’t have to attach whole cards, you can cut out pictures that you like, sayings you want to keep and even parts of pictures.

Once you have selected how you are going to arrange the cards, take the paper off the contact paper and put the backside of each card in the sticky part.  Once you are done, all of the pictures will be up facing you and you should not be able to see any contact paper.

Finally take the collage and attach it to the outside frame of the window with the Christmas cards facing towards the window pane.

Now next Christmas, you will have a beautiful vintage window with the best Christmas cards of the season hanging on your wall.
